How To Dehydrate Mushrooms

How to Dehydrate Your Mushrooms: The Ultimate Guide to Mushroom Dehydration

You've just grown some juicy fresh mushroom fruits and are looking for the most effective method to preserve them. Let's help!

Mushrooms rot very quickly after being harvested. While they can last 7 days refrigerated, they ideally need to be dehydrated. The dehydration process removes the water, allowing a shelf life of up to 2+ years.

Why Dehydrate Mushrooms?

Dehydrating mushrooms is essential for long-term storage. By removing the moisture content, you prevent mold and decay, preserving the potency and flavor of your mushrooms for an extended period.

Step-by-Step Guide to Dehydrating Mushrooms

Step 1: Harvest Fresh Mushrooms

  • Pick mushrooms at their peak maturity for optimal potency and flavor.

  • Clean off any dirt or debris gently without using water.

Step 2: Pre-Dry the Mushrooms

  • Place the mushrooms on a paper towel or a clean, dry surface.

  • Allow them to air dry for a few hours until the surface moisture evaporates.

Step 3: Use a Dehydrator

  • Arrange the mushrooms in a single layer on the dehydrator trays.

  • Set the dehydrator to a low temperature, ideally between 35-45°C (95-113°F).

  • Dry the mushrooms for 6-12 hours, checking periodically for crispness.

Step 5: Test for Dryness

  • The mushrooms should be brittle and snap easily when fully dehydrated.

  • Any remaining moisture can lead to mold growth, so ensure they are thoroughly dry.

Step 6: Store Properly

  • Place dried mushrooms in an airtight amber glass container. You can purchase our airtight container here.

  • Always add a moisture sachet to reduce the presence of water. You can purchase moisture sachets HERE.

  • Store in a cool, dark place to maintain potency and prevent light or heat exposure.

By following these steps, you can effectively dehydrate and preserve your magical mushroom varieties, ensuring they remain potent and ready for use for up to 2+ years. Happy dehydrating!
